The Durban University of Technology (DUT) is committed to creating a safe and secure environment for students, staff and visitors across all its campuses. A key part of achieving this is the dedication of security personnel who work tirelessly to ensure that safety protocols are upheld every day.
One such individual is Mr Xolani Ngcobo, affectionately known as uBaba uNgcobo, who has been serving the University as a Security Officer since 2007. Originally from oShabeni in Port Shepstone, Ngcobo is currently stationed at the Open House Building, located opposite Steve Biko Campus.
For nearly two decades, Ngcobo has played an important role in maintaining security and ensuring that access control measures are observed at one of DUT’s key entry points. His responsibilities include monitoring the main entrance and ensuring that everyone entering the building complies with the University’s safety protocols.
Despite the demands of his role, Ngcobo says the most rewarding part of his work is the opportunity to assist students and staff.
“My favourite part of the job is helping people. Whether it is assisting students, guiding visitors or supporting staff members, it gives me satisfaction to know that I am making a positive contribution,” he said.
Over the years, Ngcobo has witnessed significant developments across the University and is proud of the progress that has been made.
“The way the University’s infrastructure has developed and continues to improve is impressive. I also appreciate the access control measures implemented by the Protection Services Unit, which help ensure safe and efficient access to University premises,” he said.
According to Ngcobo, everyone has a role to play in creating a safe campus environment.
He encourages staff members to always carry their access cards, noting that this makes it easier to identify authorised individuals and strengthens security at access points. He also emphasises the importance of mutual respect between security personnel, students and staff.
“We interact with people every day, and it is important for everyone to respect security officers and comply with the rules and procedures in place,” he said.
Ngcobo believes that strengthening security at all entrances can help reduce opportunities for criminal activity and further improve safety across DUT campuses.
He hopes to see the continued strengthening of safety and security measures at all access points to help prevent criminal activities within and around DUT premises.
Through his dedication and commitment to service, uBaba uNgcobo continues to play an important role in creating a safe and welcoming environment for the DUT community.
