SATICA Awards for DUT Choirs

The Durban University of Technology choirs recently participated in the South African Tertiary Institutions Choral Association (SATICA) Festival held at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) last week.

SATICA arranges music workshops and symposia throughout the year, the highlight being the annual competition which is held during the July vacation period. The competition is adjudicated by well known South African composers as well as musical gurus of various schools of music within universities.

The DUT Durban and Midlands choirs were nominated in the Silver, Gold and Platinum categories.

The University’s Midlands Choir won the following awards:

– Position 2: HIV/AIDS awareness rendition.

– Position2: Western rendition.

– Position 2: Overall winner-Gold category.

The University’s Durban Choir won the Mezzo Soprano Solo First Place 70%.

Thokozani Sibiya, Student Development Officer in the Department of Student Governance said, “For the first time this year, the competition included a community outreach component which saw the choirs visit various children’s homes in the area, perfoming various chores such as cleaning the yard, cooking a meal for children and painting. This was hugely appreciated by the homes and students who accompanied the choirs,” she said.

Sibiya added that DUT choirs always look forward to this competition as a highlight of the choral program of action.
