SHOWCASING GOOD ASSESSMENT PRACTICES AT DUT EVENT

Staff of the Centre for Quality Promotion and Assurance (CQPA) who manage the Assuring the Integrity of Assessment Practices project, recently held a well-attended and successful event to showcase and celebrate some of the excellent assessment practices being used successfully by academic staff across all faculties.

The range of presentations was varied, and included Dr. Kemm-Stols and Ms. Reynolds’ (Interior Design) case study of an approach that seeks to challenge the barriers between modules within the curriculum. Through a project-based approach, a single continuous design project is sustained across the academic year, with each module and its assessments contributing directly to the achievement of the outcomes. Dr Govender (Information Systems) explained a technology-driven assessment model designed to enhance academic quality, streamline logistics, and foster learner engagement. The S.M.A.R.T (Specific, Measurable, Relevant and Time Bound) framework used integrates digital platforms and micro-credentialing to support scalable, efficient, and future-ready education. Mrs. Borg (Somatology) illustrated the integration of design thinking methodology into a problem-based learning context. This approach demonstrated the promotion of adaptability, innovation, and critical reflection, enabling students to meet the learning outcomes aligned with the appropriate National Qualifications Framework (NQF) level. It also demonstrated the value of collaborative engagement between students and community stakeholders, contributing meaningfully to societal well-being.

Dr Paulette Powell: Project Manager at CQPA said, “These are only three of the several presentations that stimulated discussion and enabled those present to learn more about how less traditional assessment strategies can be practised with great success.”
