A vibrant 24-year-old born in the Eastern Cape, Thandiswa Sihlobo graduated Cum Laude for her Diploma in Business Administration at the Durban University Technology’s (DUT’s) Autumn Graduation held at Indumiso Campus Hall on Tuesday, 16 May 2023.
The dedicated graduate detailed that she did not intend to study Business Administration, however she believed that when the universe speaks you must listen.
“My initial choice was Public Relations, a field that I was deeply passionate about. However, my application was rejected, which was a tough pill to swallow. Nonetheless, I refused to be deterred and decided to pursue an Extended Curriculum Programme (ECP) in Business Administration, which proved to be an excellent decision. This did not only prepare me for the mainstream programme but also opened new opportunities for me, broadening my horizons and deepening my knowledge of the business world,” she said.
After she was not accepted to enrol for the Public Relations and Communications, she fell in love with the Business Administration and she further narrated why she chose Business Administration.
“I found myself drawn to the field of Business Administration. I was fascinated by the principles of management and leadership, and how these could be applied in the real world to drive growth and success. I was also intrigued by the challenges and opportunities that come with managing people, processes, and resources in a complex and ever-changing business environment. Ultimately, I found that the Diploma in Management Sciences, specialisation in Business Administration, was the perfect fit for me.,” she proudly said.
The Cum Laude graduate shared that her journey at DUT has been filled with both challenges and growth. One of the challenges that she has faced, is struggling with mental health issues. However, she is grateful for the measures and mental health awareness drives that DUT has put in place to support students.
When asked what motivated her to focus and do well on her studies, she detailed that it’s a combination of personal and family reasons. Sihobo explained that she was motivated by the desire to be the first one in her family to graduate from university, and to make her late grandmother proud. She instilled the importance of education as a means of achieving success and fulfilling her potential.
Upon receiving the good news that she would graduate Cum Laude, she expressed her milestone achievement.
“I am filled with a sense of overwhelming emotion. I am grateful and humbled by this experience and feel a deep sense of pride and accomplishment. Being recognized for my academic achievements in this way is a testament to the hard work and dedication that I have put into my studies. It is also a reminder of the support and guidance that I have received from my family, friends, dedicated lecturers, and mentor Mrs T.Z Qangule. I believe that each challenge has helped me to grow and develop as a person and has prepared me for the next step in my journey,” she proudly said.
Sihlobo is currently pursuing an Advance Diploma in Marketing and Advertising Communications at the Red and Yellow Creative School of Business, which aligns with the Diploma in Business Administration. This programme will equip her with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the dynamic and fast-paced world of marketing and advertising.
Furthermore, she advised first year students to embrace the power of their voice and never shy away from asking questions. She urges them to engage in the university activities that resonate with their passions and values.
“Cement yourself in the academic space by dedicating time and effort to your studies, nurturing your curiosity, and expanding your knowledge. Embrace your authentic self and allow your unique perspective to shine, for it is through being true to yourself that you will make a meaningful impact. Be a part of the solution, approach challenges with a problem-solving mind-set, and actively contribute to the growth and well-being of your academic and professional community. In doing so, you will stand out and create a path of success that reflects your passion and dedication,” she advised.
