SOMATOLOGY STUDENTS ARE COMMITTED TO DUT LIVING VALUES

The Department of Somatology at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) hosted an interactive and empowering Students Living Values Workshop at Ritson Hall, on Monday, 11 August 2025.

The workshop highlighted the DUT ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework, built on five core values: transparency, honesty, integrity, respect and accountability. They are further supported by the principles of fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion and excellence.

Acting Head of Department Mrs Dorinda Borg opened the day with a warm welcome. She emphasised the importance of coming together to reflect on shared values for both personal and professional growth and expressed appreciation to staff for coordinating such an empowering dialogue.

“Students you must be aware that you are not just shaping your careers, but you are shaping kinder societies that you will be living in tomorrow. So, keep that in mind because is very powerful. Such dialogue is very important to have shared understanding of living values and principles,” said Mrs Borg.

Professor Gugu Mchunu, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, delivered thought-provoking remarks, urging students to live out values in action, not just in theory.

“The main question is why it is so important to live by these values and what it truly means to do so. We each have personal and family values and these guide our behaviour and decisions. Living your values means aligning your actions with what you believe is most important in life.”

She also added that for over 30 years in higher education, she has never before seen an institution where everyone knows the strategy, values and principles so clearly.

Deputy Dean, Professor Pavitra Pillay, stressed the importance of graduates upholding professional standards and ethical conduct in the workplace. She reminded students that Somatology is not only about treating patients but also about building relationships, fostering connection and establishing trust to deliver outstanding healthcare.

Dr Nokuthula Mavela led an engaging, step-by-step session unpacking DUT’s Living Values and demonstrating how to apply them in daily life.

Students from first to fifth year participated actively in the discussions, receiving gifts in recognition of their contributions. The workshop concluded with a pledge, led by Mrs. Kiveshni Rammanhor, where students vowed to uphold the DUT Living Values in both their professional and personal lives.

Delivering the closing remarks, Ms Nomakhosi Mpofana expressed gratitude to Mrs. Borg, the Somatology staff, students and all contributors to the event.

“Putting together an event like this is not easy and it cannot be achieved without the assistance of others. We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to making this event a success. Together, we continue to live out the DUT values in all that we do,” she said.
