Songs and Dance Dominated at Pietermaritzburg Graduation

The second day of the Autumn graduation ceremonies for the Durban University of Technology (DUT) was a huge success. The DUT Midlands graduation sessions took place at the FJ Sithole Hall, Indumiso Campus, Imbali.

Taking selfies on stage, spectacular dance moves, traditional attire, sophisticated hairstyles, bedazzling fashion and loud ululations from parents and loved ones were the order of the day during the exciting Faculty of Arts and Design morning session.

The DUT choir pelted out beautiful renditions of songs, especially inspiring the graduands with the wonderful lyrics of ‘being the best they can be’. The first session session also saw many graduands taking to the stage and making the most of their moment with electric dance moves, some doing push-ups on stage, even to the extent of graduand Sifundo Manqoba Ntshangase doing a ‘free fall’, much to the delight of the audience.

DUT’s Arts and Design Executive Dean, Dr Rene Smith congratulated all those who had graduated, encouraging all to come back to further their studies as they are the roles models for future generations.

For Khulekani Bhengu, dressing up in his traditional isiZulu attire was important to him. “It is an important day for me so having my traditional spear, shield and clothes was important to me and my family. I am proud of who I am and where I come from and I wanted to show everyone on my grad day,” he said excitedly.

The Faculty of Arts and Design saw 220 students graduate with their degree of Bachelor of Education, six graduates receiving cum laude and two receiving the prestigious deans merit award.

The second session for the day concluded with three faculties namely: The Faculty of Accounting and Informatics, Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment and the Faculty of Health Sciences. Two graduands received their Masters degrees in the Faculty of Accounting and Informatics.

Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Thandwa Mthembu, also added his congratulatory message to the graduates, saying that graduation was an important milestone for a graduate, and those who had graduated were the ‘cream of the crop’.

“Always remember to do things you are entrusted with the right way, with dedication, honesty, integrity, and with excellence and accountability,” he said.
