SRC DEPUTY-PRESIDENT, THANDOLWETHU APRIL GRADUATES FOR HER NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN ACCOUNTING

The Student Representative Council (SRC) Deputy President, Thandolwethu April obtained her National Diploma in Accounting at the DUT 2023 Autumn Graduation ceremony held at the Indumiso Campus Hall, this morning (Tuesday, 16 May 2023).

There were loud cheers and singing as April (22) from Butterworth in the Eastern Cape walked the graduation stage. She is proud of herself for managing to lead by example and not lose focus on the main reason she joined DUT.

“Walking on that stage, I became emotional. I am very proud of myself for being able to walk this walk. I am grateful for being patient and managing to push through all the hardships I faced during my journey. Attending the graduation has motivated me to obtain more qualifications and I am grateful to all those who formed part of my support structure. A big thank you to my parents and two sisters for coming all the way to witness my big moment,” said April.

During this Autumn Graduation, six SRC members will be graduating. April said this proves that they are a different SRC that takes pride in its academics.

“Gone are those days of student leaders who do not graduate and do not finish their studies. We have changed that picture and we are showing the world that it is possible with time management and discipline. I am very proud of the leadership that the 2022/23 SRC has shown, and I am certain that our achievement will open doors for more opportunities,” added April

One thing she learnt from her leadership role is the importance of having a manner of approach in all situations, being able to address matters in a respectful manner.

Her proud father, Mr Siyabulela Sangqu (60) was ecstatic when he heard his young daughter’s name being called on stage. He became emotional as he recalled April’s journey from the young age until now. However, he is happy that his daughter’s academic journey is starting to bear fruits.

“I always encourage them that wherever they go, they must add value to the society. I quote in the Bible, Matthew 5 verse 13 to 16, which says you are the salt of the world. Wherever you go and there is no taste, you must add taste and you must bring light,” said Sangqu.

Sangqu, was a bit skeptical at first about his daughter joining student politics, but he later realized sometimes being a leader is not to rebel but to bring about change and stability. His message to his daughter is to continue striving for excellence and never lose sight of the values she was taught at home. He highlighted respect as one of the important values to succeed in life.
