SRC HOSTS VIBRANT DUT FESTIVAL FOR FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS

The Student Representative Council (SRC) at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) hosted the DUT Festival, a vibrant two-day event designed to welcome first year students. Held on 13 March 2026 at Indumiso Campus in Pietermaritzburg and on 14 March 2026 at Curries Fountain in Durban, the festival brought together students, staff, and university units to celebrate the start of the academic year.

The event began with a formal morning session, where speeches from representatives across DUT set the tone for the day, reinforcing the institution’s commitment to nurturing a supportive, inclusive, and vibrant university community. Student Governance and Development Manager Mr Masiza Ngcula welcomed students and staff, praising first time entering students for attending the event. He also commended the SRC for creating a platform that encourages reflection on the important, less glamorous aspects of university life and for going beyond the traditional welcome programme.

SRC President Mr Sihle Nkosi described the festival as more than just an event on the university calendar, but an important occasion to officially welcome students into the DUT community. He emphasised that students are joining the institution at a significant time, as the university continues to be guided by its strategic vision of building an innovative, inclusive and transformed institution.

This festival was organised so that first year students can begin to understand the culture of DUT and the values that define how things are done at the institution, what is proudly referred to as the DUT way, said the SRC President.

He further encouraged first year students to actively engage in their academic journey by participating in student organisations, joining co-curricular and extracurricular activities, and making use of the many opportunities available on campus.

The event also featured presentations from representatives of various units, including Financial Aid, Student Counselling, and the Disability Rights Unit, who provided valuable information on the range of support services available to assist students in navigating both academic and personal challenges throughout their studies.

Following the formal proceedings, the festival transitioned into an afternoon of energy, fun, and celebration. The second venue transformed into a lively hub of music, dance, and festivities. The stage came alive with performances from dancers and singers, while popular artists including Maskandi star Menzi Musician and DJ GoldMax kept the crowd entertained as students danced, sang along, and celebrated their new journey at DUT.

The festival attracted large numbers of students, many dressed in glamorous and fashion forward outfits, adding to the vibrant and colourful atmosphere. From live performances to laughter and shared moments, the event fostered a strong sense of togetherness and belonging, highlighting that university life is not only about academics, but also about culture, friendship, and community.

Delivering the closing remarks, Student Development Officer Ms Hlengiwe Ngcobo from Pietermaritzburg expressed her sincere appreciation to all attendees for their active participation and vibrant energy. She commended students for embracing the spirit of the festival and contributing to its overall success.
