Growing up in Flagstaff in the Eastern Cape, Asanda Mbedla (31) always believed that education can open doors to a better future. From an early age, she understood the importance of determination, hard work, and staying committed to her dreams.
Asanda proudly graduated from the Durban University of Technology (DUT) with an Advanced Diploma in Management Sciences in Quality Management under the Faculty of Management Sciences. She had achieved Cum Laude and received the Dean’s Merit Award at the DUT 2026 Autumn Graduation ceremony held at the Olive Convention Centre on Tuesday, 26 May 2026.
Her journey at university was not always easy, like many students, Asanda faced moments of pressure, uncertainty, and exhaustion. Balancing academic responsibilities with her personal challenges often assessed her strength and patience. However, instead of allowing those obstacles to discourage her, she used them as motivation to push herself even harder.
Mbedla gained recognition for her dedication to excellence and magnificent work ethics. No matter how challenging a work may have been, she felt that success came from giving it her all. One of the values she upheld during her academic career was accountability. She gained the ability to accept accountability for her work, efficiently manage her time, and keep an optimistic outlook even under pressure.
“Graduating Cum Laude and receiving the Dean’s Merit Award became one of the proudest moments of my life. These achievements represented more than academic success, they symbolised the sacrifices, sleepless nights, and determination that shaped my university experience,” she expressed.
She said that when she shared the news with her family, they were overjoyed and excited to see her walk across the graduation stage. She added that her family even shared the news with her neighbours, proudly celebrating her achievement with the community.
In the future, Asanda wants to establish a prosperous career in quality management so she can advance her professional abilities and make a constructive contribution to her industry. She is enthusiastic about developing herself, getting better, and having a major influence at work.
To first-year students, Asanda encourages them to stay committed to their studies, manage their time effectively, and have confidence in their abilities. She believes that challenges are part of the journey and that determination and hard work are essential for overcoming obstacles.
