STRONG EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND INSPIRES RAMLAKHAN TO PASS CUM LAUDE

Coming from a family where his parents were both educators, meant one thing to Shiven Ramlakhan-to strive for excellence in his chosen career field of Electrical Engineering.

“Both my parents are ex-educators, they served the state for 30 plus years. Due to this, education was a number one priority not only to me but even those who went through their hands as children and are now successful people in society,” said Ramlakhan.

Ramlakhan graduated Cum Laude for his Bachelor of Technology (BTech) Degree in Electrical Engineering during the second session of the 2018 Spring graduation ceremony at the DUT Fred Crookes Sports Centre.

After completing his high school education in 2008, the Tongaat resident decided to further his studies at a TVET college. However, due to being unsatisfied with his N6 qualification, he thereafter registered with DUT, where he obtained his National Diploma in Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current) and now his BTech Degree.

“My support system has to be my parents and my loved ones who are close to me. In order to accomplish this achievement, I have put in a lot of effort, this includes many days working till late hours and sometimes even sleepless nights through my dedication,” explained Ramlakhan.

Curious with electrical work as a kid, Ramlakhan studied his BTech part-time and is now working for Cash Connect- a company which deals with fully automated cash safes for various clients.

“I used to be an inquisitive young boy who used to be curious on how electricity works, and also tried to fix electrical battery-operated toys, but at that age not knowing much about how things really worked, I made the situation worse,” added Ramlakhan.

Ramlakhan plans to become a registered technologist with the Engineering Council of South Africa, thereafter he wants to complete an MBA qualification and work in a plant environment as a plant engineer.

He further thanked every lecturer at DUT for taking their time in helping him to make a difference in society, with their passion and sincerity.
