The Department of Food and Nutrition at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) proudly hosted its Annual Student Awards Day 2025 at Rendezvous Restaurant, Steve Biko Campus, to celebrate student excellence, dedication, and resilience. This year’s event held special significance as it marked 21 years of DUT, a milestone symbolising growth, innovation, and transformation.
The ceremony honoured students who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to their studies and to the values of the department.
In her address, the Head of Department, Professor Ashika Naicker, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the staff for their unwavering support and hard work, industry partners and suppliers, whose collaboration continues to bridge the gap between academia and industry, creating invaluable opportunities for students.
“To students, this event is a testament to the hard work, dedication and resilience that each of you has shown throughout the year. Your achievements remind us of why we do what we do; to nurture adaptive graduates who are passionate about Consumer Science,’’ she explained.
She also recognised the legacy of the Clarice King and Jean Byrdone Awards, established by former Heads of Department to support generations of aspiring professionals.
Guests were inspired by keynote speaker Ms Tarynn Lott, a proud DUT alumna who continues to excel in the industry and mentors future graduates.
Among the top achievers was Amanda Ngcamu, a third-year student, who walked away with two awards: the Academic Excellence Award (2nd Year, 2024), worth R1000 plus a gift bag, and the Best Academic in Nutrition (2nd Year, 2024), accompanied by a R500 Makro voucher.
Reflecting on her success, Amanda said: “This means a lot because it is one of the goals I have had since joining DUT. I have always aimed for excellence since primary school.”
She encouraged her peers to work hard, believe in themselves, and set clear goals, while cautioning them to stay disciplined, as achieving academic excellence is never easy.
Another outstanding achiever, Ryan Gurduth, received the Practical Front of House (2025) and Academic Excellence Award (1st Year, 2024). Overflowing with excitement, he shared: “This has been an amazing journey. Being rewarded for hard work is truly motivating, and I will continue to strive for excellence.”
Other students who excelled and obtained multiple awards included Sanrika Sahadeo (2 awards), Thapelo Moses (2), Nkosingiphile Nkwanyana (2), Kamva Mguqu (2), and Riashnie Thaver, who proudly walked away with three awards.
All winners were honoured with cash prizes, gifts, and certificates in recognition of their excellence.
