The Durban University of Technology (DUT) Advancement and Alumni Relations unit proudly announces Tawananyasha Hwata, a third-year Urban and Regional Planning student, as the winner of the DUT RISE (Pre-Alumni) Programme logo design competition. His compelling design, rich in symbolism and institutional relevance, was selected to represent the spirit and purpose of the RISE initiative, to celebrate the journey of DUT students as they transition into proud alumni and impactful citizens.
Hailing from a strong design background, Hwata entered the competition as the founder of Rudo Productions, a graphic design company he launched in April 2024. For him, this achievement is more than just a win but it’s a turning point.
“Being chosen as the logo design winner for such a prestigious programme is an achievement for which I am deeply grateful to the LORD Almighty. This is more than just a logo, it’s a symbol of the perseverance and purpose that defines my creative journey,” said Hwata.
Driven by a desire to establish a consistent stream of work for his fledgling business, Hwata described the competition as a crucial opportunity. “As a young entrepreneur, one of my biggest challenges has been gaining trust in my abilities. Many of the opportunities I’ve had came with limitations because people doubted whether I could deliver. I’ve walked into numerous businesses this year, handing out my business cards, but responses were often cold,” he explains.
It was this persistence, despite discouragement, that fuelled his determination when he discovered the DUT RISE logo competition. “I saw it as a doorway to showcase the value of my abilities and build credibility. I thought if I can say one of my designs is being used by DUT, that would be a major milestone for my profile,” he said.
His design approach was intentional and aligned closely with the vision of the DUT RISE Programme. The logo integrates a book as the foundation symbolising learning and dynamic human figures to reflect celebration and graduation. The colour palette draws directly from DUT’s faculty colours, forming a visual journey from foundational disciplines to triumphant achievement.
His message through the logo is one of encouragement: “I hope students and alumni alike will see the logo and be reminded that while the journey may be tough, the reward of graduating and being upskilled with work readiness is worth it all. Success is a result of continuous learning, not only in the classroom, but through life itself,” added Hwata.
Reflecting on the creative process, he shares a challenge many young designers face knowing when to stop revising. “It’s easy to second-guess yourself, especially when you’re passionate about your work. My advice to other creatives is simple just trust your ability to create something great. Believe in your gift and don’t let fear stall your progress,” he added.
Hwata’s journey is an inspiring testament to resilience, faith and the power of believing in your vision, a spirit that DUT RISE aims to instil in every graduate. His winning logo will now become the face of the programme, symbolising not only the rise of DUT students, but also of young South African creatives stepping boldly into their purpose.
