ASPIRING to set a good example for young artists has once again yielded positive results for Durban’s gqom star, TDK MaCassette, also known as the ‘gqom barbie.’
TDK, whose real name is Thandeka Mkhwanazi, will be obtaining her BTech in Communications Management at the Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) 2020 Virtual Graduation ceremony to be held at 12 p.m midday, on 10 June 2020. The virtual graduation ceremony will taking place online via the DUT website, www.dut.ac.za
Mkhwanazi first obtained her Diploma in Public Relations at DUT and then continued her studies to BTech level.
The Left, Right or Domoroza hitmaker from Montclair is ecstatic about her achievement and hopes that other artists can follow in her footsteps.
“I needed something to fall back on, especially knowing that I come from a well-educated family background. I want to be an inspiration to the youth, to show them that it’s very important to have some type of qualification in the entertainment industry. You meet different people with different aspects on business, that you as an artist should understand or have some type of understanding,” said TDK.
She is certain that she always knew that she was born for the media industry.
Furthering her studies was definitely not easy journey for her as she had to juggle the pressure of growing her music career and her books.
“I had to minus friends and going out unless I’m working. I substituted it with just family time there and there because they really supported me. At times I would want to give up because it was a lot but I made it through faith and prayer,” stated TDK.
Unlike most students who take a break after obtaining their diplomas, TDK jumped into the next level the following year without even thinking twice.
She graduated for her Diploma in Public Relations last year in April and will be graduating once again next month.
This time around she is set to graduate together with her younger sister who will also be obtaining her BTech in Communications Management at DUT.
