Riashnie Thaver (25) from Bluff, Durban, is an exceptional student who has made a significant impact in the field of Food and Nutrition. She has successfully completed her Advanced Diploma in Consumer Sciences: Food and Nutrition, showcasing a profound commitment to excellence, perseverance, and innovation, solidifying her position as a shining star in the culinary and nutritional sciences.

Thaver’s educational journey began at Glenwood Preparatory School, where she spent seven formative years. She then attended Durban Girls’ High School, achieving outstanding results with four distinctions in her matric exams. Her exceptional performance in Consumer Sciences earned her the prestigious Umlazi District Award.

Alongside her academic achievements, she had also been actively involved in sports such as cricket, netball, and hockey. Additionally, she had enjoyed participating in various cultural activities, including the debate club, toastmasters, the shakespeare society, and chess.

She marked a significant milestone in her educational journey by graduating from the Durban University of Technology (DUT) in 2024. The Autumn graduation ceremony was a proud moment, as she received her Diploma in Consumer Sciences: Food and Nutrition. “I felt an overwhelming sense of joy as I graduated for the first time in my life. I made a promise to myself to make my parents proud, and I am grateful that my dream of furthering my education has become a reality,” said Thaver.

She expressed her lifelong passion for food, revealing that she had always been fascinated by cooking and growing food. According to her, she said that the course was the perfect fit, as it comprehensively covered all aspects of food and provided her with the opportunity to be creative and innovative.

“I am passionate about driving innovation and development in the food and nutrition sector. I believe change requires collective contribution. Research is a key interest, and I have worked on impactful projects that inspired my career path. I am also dedicated to culinary innovation and transforming Consumer Sciences,” explained Thaver.

She has successfully collected numerous prestigious awards for her outstanding achievements, including the Best Food Skills Award in 2024 and the Best Advanced Diploma Academic Student Award.  Additionally, she has received recognition for her tireless efforts in promoting healthy lifestyles, as well as the esteemed Dean of Students Award.

“I strongly identify with DUT’s living values, particularly transparency and integrity. I believe in operating with clarity and honesty, adhering to rules and doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. This commitment guides my actions in all aspects of my life,” she said.

She extended a warm welcome to the first-year students, wishing them an incredible journey at DUT. “This institution has had a profound impact on my life, and I am confident it will do the same for you. DUT feels like home to me, and I encourage you to make the most of your time here. Focus on your studies, but also be sure to enjoy your university experience,” she expressed.

Thaver concluded by announcing that she will be graduating at the annual 2025 DUT Autumn Graduation ceremony with an Advanced Diploma in Consumer Sciences: Food and Nutrition.
