The ANNUAL DUT EMPLOYEE WELLNESS DAY A SUCCESS

The ANNUAL DUT EMPLOYEE WELLNESS DAY A SUCCESS

Take Control of Your Health”, was the theme for this year’s Employees Wellness Day which was held at the Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) Fred Crooks Sport Centre, this week.

The Employee Wellness Day is an annual event, organised by the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) within the DUT Human Resources Department, and in partnership with PSG.

Manager of the Employee Wellness Programme, Samantha Rajcoomar emphasized the importance of employees taking care of their health.

“The whole purpose of this programme is to have employees complete their health risk screenings. This means they need to know their status of their health at this stage,” she said.

The wellness day also provided a platform for staff to undertake the necessary health screenings for their blood pressure examination, iron levels, BMI, in order to know their current health status.

Service providers at the event included the DUT Somatology Department, medical aid service providers, DUT Isolempilo Clinic, financial planning institutions and beauty consultants.

The DUT Food and Nutrition Department showcased an exhibition based on the amount of saturated and unsaturated fat that are found in processed foods. Nokwazi Hadebe from the department of Food and Nutrition, explained what their department aimed to achieve at the event.

“We are here to emphasize the role of food and food choices and its impact it has on peoples’ lifestyles and what a vital role food plays in the prevention and treatment lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, mellitus, obesity and cardiovascular diseases,” said Habebe.

DUT employee Philani Ntshangase, who attended the event, said the event was well-received by staff. “Although this year there were not as many programmes as last year, as staff, we do appreciate the opportunity to be able to screen and know our health status,” he said.
