The Durban University of Technology’s Faculty of Accounting and Informatics, Department of Auditing and Taxation, under the leadership of Professor Olive Stumke, hosted a highly successful Class Representatives Appreciation Ceremony and Leadership Engagement Session on 5 November 2025 at the Ritson Campus, Hotel School.
The purpose of the event was to recognise and thank class representatives for their dedication, leadership, and meaningful contribution to the department. Their commitment to supporting academic processes, representing student needs, and strengthening communication channels between staff and students was acknowledged and celebrated.
In attendance was Professor Olive Stumke, Head of Department; Mr Masiza Ngculu, Manager: Student Governance; Mr Sihle Nkosi, SRC president; Mr Fani Ndlovu, Technician 4IR Lab; department staff members and student leaders. The programme was organized by Mr Sizwe Ntuli, a lecturer in the department, who coordinated the day’s activities.
The event opened with a warm welcome from Professor Stumke, Head of Department, who set the tone for the day. This was followed by an address from Mr Sizwe Ntuli, who delivered the purpose of the day and emphasised the importance of leadership grounded in DUT’s Living Values. He reminded attendees that “true leadership must be anchored in Respect, Accountability, Integrity, Compassion, Excellence, and Transparency,” underscoring the principles that guide student leadership within the institution.
Mr Ngculu delivered a thought-provoking presentation titled Student Leadership at DUT. His address highlighted that effective leadership demands “resilience, courage, and adaptability in a constantly changing environment.” He applauded the department for spearheading such a progressive initiative, noting with appreciation that this is my first time being invited by an academic department, signalling the importance of bridging collaboration between academic and governance structures.
This presentation was followed by Mr Nkosi’s insightful reflections on The Role and Impact of Student Leadership at DUT. He expressed sincere gratitude to the department for hosting such a meaningful engagement, noting that “platforms like these are essential for shaping responsible student leaders.” He further emphasised the need for continuity, stating that such programmes should be held more regularly and expanded to include other departments and faculties across the university.
Mr Fani Ndlovu then presented an engaging session on The Importance of Student Leadership and Engagement, emphasising the key steps involved in building a personal leadership brand aligned with one’s purpose. He encouraged students to cultivate authenticity and growth, reminding them that “leadership begins with knowing who you are and serving from that place of purpose.”
The department extends heartfelt appreciation to all staff members who contributed to the success of the event, including Ms. Nomfundo Nxumalo who was also the master of Ceremony for the day, Mr Malusi Biyela, Mrs Akira Singh, Mr Mluleki Dladla and the department’s dedicated interns; Nonkazimulo Khoza, Nothando Gumede, Aphiwe Mkhize, Samkelo Mkhize, and Phiwokuhle Mafuleka.
