THE DUT SPORT CLUBS FLY THE DUT FLAG HIGH AT THE USSA TOURNAMENTS

It was a victorious moment for the Durban University of Technology (DUT) Sport Clubs as they all received top positions, with some athletes being selected at the recent USSA Tournaments to represent their province nationally. The tournaments took place at the University of Western Cape, and the University of Pretoria.

DUT athletes participated and were victorious in sport codes such as dance, volleyball, netball and rugby.

All the DUT dancers went through to the finals winning gold, silver as well as bronze medals. Overall, the DUT dance participants took second place and five couples from DUT were selected to be part of the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) team.

Student participants in DUT volleyball played many, successful games obtaining fifth position in the overall USSA games where 18 universities participated.

Nonhle Gazu was selected from the DUT Females volleyball team for the USSA National team. Sfundo Mpuku was selected from the Males volleyball players for the USSA National Team. DUT volleyball also received the USSA Chairperson Recognition Award for being the best USSA developed team for the year 2022.

In terms of netball, the DUT team played seven matches and won five, they qualified for the semi-finals and won the match. Their amazing performance had them up the log to second position. They are now promoted to the Section A Premier League.

DUT’s netball player, Percy Nxumalo, was selected for the USSA Dream team. For Nxumalo it was a dream come true.

“I feel amazing and also proud of myself for being selected as this will have a great impact on our team because of my good work I had achieved, and being known for good work can open many opportunities for me and the team,” said Nxumalo.

She encourages students to join the DUT netball team because its possible to balance academics and sport.

“I always plan my week before starting it so that it would be easier for me and it helps because I can get time to do both my school work and sports,” she said.

The rugby team played three games which was held at the University of Pretoria. They were ranked position seven out of nine teams on Section B.

The DUT rugby manager, Sibusiso Nogabe said, “The tournament gave so much experience to our young players, especially those who did not get the chance to play in the Varsity Shield earlier this year, so the experience has been tremendous for them.”
