THE LAUNCH OF THE DUT FOUNDATION, WHICH WILL INVEST IN STUDENTS

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) will be launching a fundraising component called the DUT Foundation, which will invest in students. This black-tie event will be held at the Coastlands Umhlanga Hotel & Convention Centre on Thursday, 26 May 2022, at 18h00.

The DUT Foundation was formally established in November 2017, through a resolution of the DUT Council to promote and support the development and advancement of the activities of DUT as an institution of higher learning. According to Nishie Govender, Manager: Fundraising and Alumni Relations at DUT, the DUT Foundation shall have as its complementary objective; a fund to provide scholarships, bursaries, awards and loans for the promotion of study, research, teaching and all learning which is undertaken by DUT.

“The DUT Foundation is governed by a Board of Trustees, which comprises of internal DUT executive management members and external members from the various sectors approved by the Council of DUT. The trustees have the responsibility of ensuring that the Foundation adheres to the highest governance standards possible. The trustees further support the university by mobilising resources through engagements with their networks, to establish mutually beneficial partnerships with the ultimate objective of Improving Lives and Livelihoods,” explained Govender.

She further indicated that the mandate of the DUT Foundation falls within the DUT ENVISION2030 strategic objective of Sustainability, as well as Society. Hence, the DUT Foundation will attract financial resources to invest in students by providing financial support for select institutional strategic projects, that may include scholarships for academically deserving students, the Phakimpilo Food Security Programme, as well as promoting the advancement of cutting-edge research and application.

“Essentially, the DUT Foundation is an engine of positive change that will impact on the lives and livelihoods of students as well as the community within which DUT resides,” noted Govender.

Giving more insight on the actual launch, Govender said it will be a high calibre, black-tie event which will be attended by key stakeholders from both public and private sector, who will be informed of the purpose of the DUT Foundation and invited to support its various initiatives going forward.

Guests will be welcomed by the Chairperson of the Foundation, Mr Wiseman Madinane and the DUT Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Thandwa Mthembu, will highlight the rationale and purpose of the DUT Foundation. Meanwhile, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation and Engagement Professor Sibusiso Moyo, will present the key focus areas of the Foundation with the hope of attracting philanthropic support for DUT.
