From the quiet hills of Izingolweni emerged a determined young women named Ms Abongile Cele, whose journey would become a testimony of resilience, faith, and excellence. At just 28 years old, Cele has already built a story that inspires not only his family and friends, but also many young people who dream of changing their lives through education.
She successfully completed her Postgraduate Diploma in Business and Information Management, graduating Cum Laude at the Olive Convention Centre (OCC) on Monday, 18 May 2026.
In 2018, she stepped onto the campus of Durban University of Technology (DUT) with a vision to create a better future for herself and her family. She enrolled for a Diploma in Business and Information Management, uncertain of what the future held but determined to succeed. University life was not entirely easy at first. Like many first-year students, she had to adjust to a new environment, academic pressures, and independence. Fortunately, her older sister, who was also at DUT, became a source of guidance and support, helping her navigate the unfamiliar journey.
Cele remained focused and disciplined throughout her studies, even during the difficult period of the COVID-19 pandemic, when uncertainty filled the world and education systems faced unprecedented challenges, she persevered and successfully completed her diploma in 2020. Rather than stopping there, she continued striving for greater heights. In 2022, she enrolled for an Advanced Diploma in Business and Information Management and graduated in 2023.
For her, education was never simply about obtaining qualifications. It was about proving to herself that her background did not determine her future. It was about building a life rooted in purpose, growth, and excellence. In 2025, she once again returned to DUT to pursue a Postgraduate Diploma in Business and Information Management.
“Balancing work, studies, and leadership responsibilities as a class representative demanded immense sacrifice. There were long nights, early mornings, and weekends dedicated to assignments, preparation, and supporting fellow students. Yet through discipline, faith, and determination, I managed to achieve my goal to graduate with Cum Laude,” she explained.
When asked about the DUT living values and principles she associates with most, Cele highlighted respect and excellence. She believes in holding herself to high standards while treating others with dignity and kindness. These principles have become the foundation of her success.
Although she once dreamed of becoming a nurse, life redirected her path after her matric results did not allow her to pursue that field. Instead of giving up, she embraced Business and Information Management a decision she now believes was part of God’s plan. Looking back, she sees how every challenge and every unexpected turn shaped him into the person she is today.
Beyond academics, she has built a professional career as an Admissions and Selections Academic at MANCOSA, where she helps select deserving students for admission into various programmes. Her role allows her to contribute meaningfully to higher education while continuing to grow professionally.
Yet her ambitions do not end there, she is currently registered for a master’s degree and dreams of one day obtaining a PhD and becoming an academic.
“I believe my experience within higher education institutions has prepared me for this future, and I remain confident in my ability to achieve my goals,” she added.
At the centre of Cele’s journey is faith and gratitude. She credits God for carrying him through moments of doubt and reminding him that “Prayer without faith is just words.” She also deeply appreciates the unwavering support of her friend and study partner, Nosipho Shezi, whose companionship through countless late-night study sessions became an important part of her success story.
Most importantly, Cele dedicates this achievement to her family, especially her mother, whose prayers, love, and belief in her never faded. She also carries her precious daughter in his heart as one of his greatest sources of motivation and inspiration.
