Connecting strongly with the Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s ) value of integrity is what his mother taught him through her strong faith in God as a single parent.
This instilled value is what motivated Thokozani Siphelele Mdlalose to follow this and what contributed to him graduating with his Advanced Diploma in Business and Information which falls under the DUT Business School, at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) 2026 Autumn Graduation Ceremony held at the Olive Convention Centre on Monday, 25 May 2026.
This choice of study path chosen by the 26-year-old from Richards Bay in KwaZulu-Natal; was his preferred choice as he confessed to being extremely passionate about digital information management in the public sector, aiming to improve efficiency in South African systems, such as healthcare.
“Graduating Cum Laude with a Dean’s Merit Award means the world to me. It proves that hard work pays off. It was hard to balance work and my studies, as I had to study after work and leave campus late. I thank God for guiding me. I also thank my family, especially my mother, who raised me with her prayers as a single parent, my older sister, who looked after me, and my older brother, who called on me every day to check on me. When they heard the news, they were overjoyed and so proud,” he shared ecstatically.
He had proudly joined DUT in 2021 for his first course of study and graduated with his Diploma in Business and Information Management in 2023. He further continued his academic journey, now completing his Advanced Diploma in the same field.
Currently, Thokozani is working in the Department of Finance and Information Management (Midlands). He expressed that he plans to study further and is currently registered for his Master’s degree, with the aim to deepen his expertise.
“For my career, I wish to become a leading expert in digital information management for South Africa’s public sector. I aim to complete my PhD, lead research projects, and consult on better systems,” he emphasised.
Thokozani’s advice to first-year students eyeing this career is focus on their studies, attend every class, and finish assignments on time.
“Build habits like time management and networking early. Remember, your background does not define your future. Stay true to your roots and where you come from,” he said.
