TOP ACHIEVER EMBRACES NATURAL BEAUTY AS SHE GRADUATES CUM LAUDE

For top achiever, Nomonde Manyoni, getting her makeup done for graduation was never part of the plan. She embraced a natural look as she proudly graduated Cum Laude with an Advanced Diploma in Business and Information Management during the opening ceremony of the Durban University of Technology (DUT) 2026 Autumn Graduation at Indumiso Campus in Pietermaritzburg on Monday, 11 May 2026.

Her quiet confidence and academic excellence earned her recognition as one of the top achievers for the Faculty of Accounting in Informatics. Originally from Empangeni, Nomonde described graduating Cum Laude as a deeply rewarding achievement and a reflection of years of hard work and perseverance.

“Graduating Cum Laude meant a lot to me. I was exciting to be recognised on the graduation stage. It showed the hard work, consistency, and dedication I had put into my studies. It was a reminder that all the sacrifices, long nights, and effort were worth it,” shared Nomonde.

Commenting on her natural look on her big day, Nomonde said unfortunately she does not wear makeup due to the sensitivity of her skin. As much as she was tempted to look glamourous like most of her peers graduating, Nomonde said she was not willing to take the risk. For her the moment was more about celebrating the academic journey and sacrifices behind the qualification than focusing on appearance.

Her DUT journey has developed her both academically and personally. The experience has taught her discipline, independence, and the importance of perseverance. Nomonde strongly relates to the DUT values and principles of excellence, integrity, and accountability.

“These values have encouraged me to always do my best, remain honest in my work, and take responsibility for my academic journey. They have not only guided me academically but have also played a significant role in shaping me as a person,” shared Nomonde.

Some of the challenges she faced as a student included academic pressure, financial constraints, and balancing her studies with work. She had to travel back and forth between Empangeni and Pietermaritzburg, which was physically and emotionally draining. She recalled the times when she had to sleep late and still wake up early for work at Senzelwisihe Rehabilitation Hospital where she is currently employed as an Administrator Assistant.

Nomonde shared that at one point, it became so overwhelming that she even considered deregistering because she felt like she could not cope. However, she pushed through that period with determination and support from her family, friends and lecturers. She extended her sincere gratitude to her friends who supported her by submitting her assignments when she could not travel to Pietermaritzburg due to work commitments. That experience taught her the importance of not giving up even when things feel too heavy.

Her aim is to build a successful career in the business and information management field, where she can apply both business and information systems knowledge to improve efficiency in organisations.
