The Durban University of Technology (DUT) takes pride in nurturing academic excellence, a core principle that resonates deeply with its mission. A shining example of this excellence is Kwanele Sibiya, a 23-year-old from Makhonyeni area in Jozini, who received his Advanced Diploma in Nautical Studies, accompanied by the prestigious Dean’s Merit Award. The DUT 2025 Autumn Graduation Ceremony took place at the Olive Convention Centre (OCC) on Monday, 19 May 2025.
Sharing his childhood goal, he said his fascination with nautical studies had begun in grade 9 when DUT had visited his school for a career day, introducing him to the maritime industry. From that moment on, he had been determined to pursue nautical studies after matric. He was captivated by the thrill of the sea and the opportunity to tackle new challenges.
Reflecting on his journey at DUT, he said the institution had equipped him with valuable knowledge and skills in maritime operations. He had been fortunate to have great lecturers and classmates, and the experience had boosted his confidence to make a meaningful contribution in the maritime industry. He graduated with Cum Laude in Diploma in Nautical Studies in 2024, and he sustained his academic excellence to graduate Cum Laude once again with Dean’s Merit.
“Graduating with Cum Laude and Dean’s Merit Award is a tremendous honour, showcasing my academic excellence and dedication. This achievement not only validates my hard work but also motivates me to pursue future opportunities with passion and excellence,” said Sibiya.
Sharing his biggest challenge, he said: “When I was doing my first qualification, I faced financial constraints, as I started without a sponsor/funding.This required careful budgeting and financial management. However, in August 2024, I received the exciting news that I would be selected for the Department of Transport’s bursary programme. Additionally, having achieved Cum Laude in my previous diploma, I felt pressure to maintain high standards, which drove me to work diligently and strive for excellence in my advanced studies.”
When it came to the DUT Living values and principles, he said he identified himself with transparency, honesty, and respect. He treated others with kindness and consideration, regardless of their backgrounds, beliefs, or opinions. He actively listened to and respected the perspectives of others, even when he disagreed. Regarding the principles, he aligned with professionalism and commitment, demonstrating this by attending classes regularly, completing assignments on time, and maintaining a strong work ethic in all aspects of his academic studies. He also made sure to dress and conduct himself professionally in class and at official DUT events.
“My family was very excited when they heard the news of my graduation. They had seen me work hard and persevere through the challenges of my studies since in high school, and they were thrilled to see my efforts pay off. With beaming smiles, they congratulated me on this significant achievement. We shared a moment of joy and celebration, knowing that this milestone will mark the beginning of a new chapter in my life. Their unwavering support and encouragement had been a constant source of motivation to me, and I am very grateful to have them by my side to share in the excitement of this special moment,” he explained.
He aimed to gain hands on experience and build his navigation skills, with the long-term goal of taking on leadership roles and making significant contributions to the maritime industry. Currently, he is doing his cadetship with MOL/Fairfield Chemical Carriers. He further stated that the company had sponsored him to attend a two-month bridging course at Anglo-Eastern Maritime Academy in India, which had significantly expanded his knowledge.
Giving advice to first-year students, he said that staying focused on your goals and maintaining a curiosity driven mindset was essential. He further mentioned that prioritising studies, managing time effectively was crucial. By staying committed and disciplined, students would not only achieve academic success but also create meaningful experiences that would last a lifetime.
