Video Technology’s Njapha wins top student award at 8th African Emerging Filmmakers Awards

Budding filmmaker and Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) Video Technology Alumni, Ayanda Njapha was announced as winner of the Best Student Production Award at the 8th African Emerging Filmmakers Awards (AEFA) held at the Greyville Racecourse recently.

Njapha’s winning film was produced last year (2019) while he was still a third year student in the Video Technology Department.

He took to social media to thank his friend and fellow video technology graduate, Muziwenkosi Kumkani Mphambo for mentoring him and financially sponsoring his entry into these awards.

“I want to thank Muziwenkosi Kumkani Mphambo in all the years as my support system. I knew nothing about TV or Film when I came to DUT but he was there to teach and guide me. Most importantly, he took his money a few days ago to submit my student production to the African Emerging Filmmakers Award because he believed in my work,” wrote Njapha.

Video Technology lecturer, Lance Lutge applauded Njapha saying, “Congrats to graduate Ayanda Njapha for winning the 8th African Emerging Filmmakers award! What an achievement! We are so proud of you”

Formerly known as the Durban Metro Film Awards the AEFAs are hosted by Ethekwini Filmmakers Association, with the assistance of the Durban Film Office, KwaZulu-Natal Film Commission, and KZN Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs.

According to the Durban Film Office’s website, these awards are a growing platform that encourages good quality productions and has seen local emerging film producers witness seeing their films on national television after receiving awards or nominations.
