VIWE MBUTHO BELIEVES IN SELF-BELIEF WHICH FUELLED HER TO ACHIEVE A DEAN’S MERIT AWARD

Viwe Amanda Mbutho is a 21-year-old from Durban who has built her academic journey on perseverance, growth, and self-belief. Born and raised in Durban, she has always valued education and the opportunities it brings for personal and professional development.

She completed her Diploma in Library and Information studies and graduated at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) 2026 Autumn Graduation ceremony with Cum Laude and received the Dean’s Merit Award for Academic Excellence. The ceremony took place at the Olive Convention Centre (OCC) on Tuesday, 19 May 2026.

Her journey at the DUT was both challenging and fulfilling. She describes her experience as one filled with learning and discovery, where she developed a deep appreciation for her chosen field, Library and Information Studies.

Although it was not her first choice, Mbutho believes that the Diploma in Library and Information Studies ‘chose her,’ and she is grateful that she followed this path. She has grown to enjoy the field and is committed to building her future within it.

“During my studies, I faced challenges, particularly moments when it was difficult to stay motivated. However, I pushed through those struggles with determination,” she said.

She was surprised and overwhelmed when she achieved Cum Laude. She admits she never expected distinction, as her main goal was simply to do her best. Receiving this achievement filled her with gratitude and pride. Her family, especially her parents, were thrilled and expressed how proud they were of her success.

She strongly identifies with the DUT living values and principles of excellence, integrity, and compassion, which guide how she approaches both her academic and personal life. These principles continue to shape her actions and goals.

Currently, Mbutho is employed at DUT as a residence information literacy tutor, where she supports students in developing essential academic and research skills. This role has further strengthened her passion for education and information services.

She plans to further her studies in Library and Information Science, continuing to grow and expand her knowledge in the field.

“My long term goal is to become an information specialist who contributes meaningfully to my community by using knowledge, communication, and technology to make a positive impact. I aspire to empower others through access to information and to play a role in creating opportunities for growth, education, and development within my community,” Mbutho explained.

To first-year students, she encourages self-belief and hard work. She advises them to trust in their potential, even when challenges arise, and to keep pushing forward.
