VUYELWA MDODA PROVES THAT DREAMS DELAYED ARE NOT DREAMS DENIED

At 26 years of age, Vuyelwa Mdoda proudly graduated with a Diploma in Fashion Design from the Durban University of Technology (DUT) during the 2026 Autumn Graduation ceremonies, which took place this May at the Olive Convention Centre. This milestone represents not just academic success, but perseverance, growth, and unwavering determination.

Born and raised in Durban, Vuyelwa later relocated to Pretoria after matric to live with her mother, while still maintaining deep roots in Durban where her father resides giving her the unique experience of calling these two places home.

Her journey at DUT had some challenges, what was meant to be a three-year diploma turned into a five-year academic journey due to frequent hospitalisation leading from two serious car accidents. “There were moments I felt like everything was working against me. I kept reminding myself why I started, and that gave me strength to continue,” she explained. These challenges not only affected her physically but also took a toll on her academic progress and confidence. However, through these setbacks, she discovered a strength she never knew she had.

Academically, she faced difficulties in fully understanding some of her coursework. Yet, repeating certain modules became a turning point rather than a failure. It gave her the opportunity to deepen her understanding and grow into her craft. What once felt like delays became blessings in disguise. During this extended time, she had achieved remarkable milestones which led to her being selected by her lecturers to represent DUT at the prestigious Hollywoodbets Durban July in 2025, an opportunity afforded to only a few. She also gained valuable industry exposure by working backstage at the Durban Fashion Fair. Her final-year collection, which she developed independently, stands as a testament to her creativity, resilience, and growth.

She remained grounded in the value and principle of accountability and commitment. “I knew this was my journey, and I had to take responsibility for it. Giving up was never an option, even when it felt easier,” she said. This commitment was not only to herself but also to her parents, who stood by her side throughout her journey.

When her family heard the news of her upcoming graduation, it was a moment filled with pride, joy, and excitement a dream they had all been waiting to see fulfilled. Their unwavering support, alongside encouragement from friends and lecturers, played a crucial role in helping her push forward during her most difficult moments.

Choosing to study Fashion Design was her decision, driven by her passion for creativity and self-expression. “Fashion is more than clothing it is a powerful form of storytelling and identity, it allows me to express who I am without saying a word,” she explained.

She is currently working as part of the design team at Canvas and Tent, where she creates patterns for luxury tents used in lodges, game reserves, and by high-profile clients including the military, and international celebrities. This experience continues to expand her skill set and shows her that design principles extend far beyond clothing.

Vuyelwa plans to further her studies in the future. For now, she is embracing a period of self-discovery, independence, and exploring the world around her. Her long-term goal is to gain diverse industry experience and eventually establish her own fashion company.

Reflecting on her journey, Mdoda believes that everything happens for a reason. “Those extra years were not delays, they were preparation, I learned more, experienced more, and became stronger because of them,” she said.

She also shares a powerful message to fellow students. “Pursue your dreams with courage and determination, even when the journey feels overwhelming, challenges are part of the process they shape you into the person you are meant to become,” said Vuyelwa.
