At 42 years old, Nkanyezi Kubheka has proven that perseverance, discipline, and commitment to excellence can lead to remarkable success. Originally from Estcourt and currently residing in Richards Bay, Kubheka recently graduated Cum Laude with a Master of Applied Science in Chemistry from Durban University of Technology.
A hardworking and dedicated individual, Kubheka is deeply passionate about science, quality assurance, and continuous learning. He believes in maintaining discipline, perseverance, and consistently striving for excellence in every aspect of life.
Reflecting on his academic journey, Kubheka described his time at DUT as both challenging and rewarding. Through his postgraduate studies, he developed strong theoretical knowledge while gaining extensive practical laboratory experience.
“DUT provided me with opportunities for both academic and personal growth. The journey taught me the importance of consistency, time management, teamwork, and resilience,” he said.
Graduating Cum Laude holds special significance for Kubheka, representing years of sacrifice, focus, and determination.
“This achievement is proof that with discipline and perseverance, success is achievable despite challenges. It motivates me to continue striving for excellence in both my academic and professional journey,” he added.
Kubheka strongly identifies with the DUT values of excellence, integrity, and accountability. He believes these principles have guided him throughout his studies and continue to shape his professional life.
“I believe in always giving my best, maintaining honesty in my work, and taking responsibility for my decisions and outcomes,” he explained.
Balancing academic responsibilities with work commitments, deadlines, and personal pressures was one of the greatest challenges he faced during his studies. However, these demanding experiences strengthened his resilience and sharpened his time management skills.
Despite the challenges, Kubheka credits his family’s unwavering support for helping him stay motivated throughout his journey.
“My family was extremely happy, proud, and emotional when they heard about my achievement. Their encouragement played a major role in helping me succeed,” he shared.
Kubheka’s passion for chemistry began with his fascination for science and problem-solving. He particularly enjoys laboratory work, research, and developing practical solutions that contribute to industry and community improvement.
“Analytical Chemistry allows me to combine my passion for science with practical applications in quality control, environmental analysis, and research,” he said.
Currently working in an industrial and laboratory environment within quality control and water analysis, Kubheka conducts laboratory testing, ensures compliance with quality standards, and supports operational efficiency through analytical reporting.
Looking ahead, he plans to further his studies and continue building his expertise in chemistry, quality assurance, and research. His long-term ambition is to establish himself as a specialist and leader within the manufacturing, chemical, or water treatment industries, while contributing to environmental sustainability and industrial innovation.
To first-year students, Kubheka offers simple but powerful advice: remain focused, disciplined, and committed to your goals.
“Time management is very important, especially in science-related studies. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and make use of every learning opportunity available to you. Most importantly, believe in yourself and remain consistent because success comes through hard work, patience, and perseverance,” he advised.
