The Durban University of Technology (DUT) Mascot famously known as Zazu will don the iconic kit number 21 throughout the Varsity Football 2025 Tournament.
The 21-year celebration marks a significant milestone in the university’s history, which can trace its roots back to 1907. It is a special dedication to, and celebration of the University’s 21st anniversary since the Durban Institute of Technology (DIT) was renamed and rebranded as the Durban University of Technology (DUT).
MsTumi Mgudu, Sport Officer at DUT shared a brief purpose behind this gesture to give Zazu jersey number 21. She also highlighted how the gesture will boost the morale of the team.
“As the Sports Administration Unit we felt the need to appreciate the journey that the university has had to date. When we were asked about the number that we would give to our mascot, we felt that number 21 would be great to dedicate it to the growth of the university. Hopefully this will motivate the players as well.’’ said Mgudu.
Expressing his gratitude Zazu said that he feels honoured to have received this special number which carries a significant meaning and the rich history of the institution.
Zazu said: “I am very excited to receive such an honouring gesture, and it means a lot. I will make this number a famous one, that will be remembered for years even beyond the Varsity Football.’’
He also reflected on the team’s run so far and emphasised the need for the DUT community to rally behind them in their difficult start.
“I have seen our boys the way they have started the games, they are having a difficult time. It is not what we had hoped for, but I believe with the support of myself, fans and everyone will give them confidence to turn things around,” he added.
Zazu urged fans and everyone to come and support the team against the University of Free State at Harry Gwala Stadium on Thursday, 21 August 2025, the kick-off time is 18:30.
