Her motivation was strongly influenced by her sister, who recognised the growing opportunities within the ICT field. This encouragement played a key role in shaping her interest and commitment to pursuing a career in ICT. Meet Zinhle Mthimkhulu a 41-year-old woman from Nkandla and currently based in Durban.
She successfully completed her Degree of Master’s in Information and Communication Technology at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) during the 2026 Autumn Graduation ceremony, held at the Olive Convention Centre on Tuesday, 19 May 2026.
Her academic journey at the DUT has been both challenging and rewarding. Her research focused on developing a robot capable of inspecting pipelines to detect corrosion in the oil and gas sector an innovation designed to improve safety and efficiency in a critical industry.
“This journey was not without challenges, balancing academic responsibilities, a demanding workload, and family life often felt overwhelming, especially after receiving a promotion at work. However, through discipline, prayer, and the unwavering support of my supervisors, Prof Tim Adeliyi and Dr Hanna Adebanjo, with my loved ones, I managed to overcome challenges and chase the success,” she explained.
She describes her academic experience as both difficult and exhilarating, teaching her the value of consistency and discipline.
For Mthimkhulu, graduating with distinction is more than an academic achievement. It is a symbol of sacrifice, hard work, and determination. She views it as proof that consistency and resilience can lead to success, even in the face of adversity. Her achievement also serves as inspiration to others, encouraging them to believe in themselves and never give up on their dreams.
“I strongly identify with the values of honesty, integrity, respect, and accountability. In my research journey, honesty and integrity were essential in ensuring ethical and credible academic work. Accountability kept me focused and disciplined, while respect helped me build strong, positive relationships with my supervisors and academic community,” she expressed.
Her journey into Information Technology was not planned. Initially unaware of the field, she was encouraged by her sister to pursue it due to its growing opportunities. Over time, she discovered a deep passion for ICT, especially in the areas of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Today, she is employed as the ICT Applications Manager at SAPREF, where she oversees and manages application systems that support business operations. Her role reflects her expertise and commitment to driving technologically efficiently in the workplace.
“I plan to pursue a PhD in 2027, and to contribute meaningfully to the field of ICT by solving real-world problems, driving innovation, and supporting digital transformation across industries. I also plan to take on leadership roles in academia or industry, where I can mentor others and help shape the future of technology,” she added.
To first-year students, she offers powerful advice: “Never allow your background or circumstances to limit your dreams. She encourages students to stay focused, work hard, ask for help when needed, and believe in their ability to succeed, education is a powerful tool for changing the world.”
