Celebrating Cultural Diversity

DUT and its Confucius Institute, the Durban local Black Fox/Heihu Chinese Martial Art Team as well as the KwaMashu Community Arts Project: CRE/DACNCE Troupe hosted the Traditional Chinese Moon Festival & China-South Africa Cultural Gala where guests enjoyed an art feast of traditional Chinese cultural programmes and local Zulu dances.

The event, which was held in association with the Chinese Nanjing Tech University Art Troupe, was held at the Arthur Smith Hall, DUT City Campus, and enjoyed an attendance of over 300 guests from the eThekwini Municipality, DUT, Durban communities and Chinese communities.
Alan Khan, Senior Director of Corporate Affairs at DUT was the host at the gala. Khan recently returned from a visit to China where he attended a Commemorating Ceremony of the Confucius in Quzhou, Zhejiang Province. Khan shared his impression of China and his new understandings of the country’s social development culture.

Thembinkosi Ngcobo, eThekwini Parks, Recreation and Culture Department Head, expressed his appreciation to DUT and its CI for bringing Chinese traditional art performances to South Africa, saying the move enriched Durban’s diversified racial and cultural heritage and promoted closer economic and cultural exchanges between China and South Africa.

At the gala, young artists from the Chinese Nanjing Tech University Art Troupe brought spectacular programmes of traditional Chinese culture such as the dragon dance, lion dance Chinese folk dances, Chinese martial arts demonstration, traditional Chinese musical instrument performance and Chinese calligraphy, to name just a few.

The South African culture was also well-showcased at the gala.
