DUT IT Students Showcase Skills

DUT IT Students Showcase Skills

The Durban University of Technology Information Technology (IT) Department hosted its IT Showcasing at the DUT Hotel School, Ritson Campus, which saw third year students unveil exciting programmes which they had developed for real life IT systems.

The event was held on Friday (19 October 2012) last week and was in collaboration with the Department’s industry partners and NGOs.

“As part of their third year, Information Technology students are required to obtain non-trivial exposure in the development of a real life information system. Students are placed into groups and are required to acquire proposals for projects in the retail services, manufacturing, government, NGO and the small business sectors,” said DUT Information Technology lecturer Cassim Vanker.

Groups showcasing at the event were the top 6. These groups had come up with “great programmes” which were then judged by a panel which looked at functionality, the technology used, implementation as well as quality.

Former IT student and alumni Andre Beley who was one of the students mentors encouraged the participating students on how this marks a kick start to their careers and how to be better developers by standing out, doing what they love, being helpful as well as passionate.

After the judging process, the top three groups were announced. Group one, which had come up with a design of improving customer relations between the management and customers for Law Property, a company providing online property solutions, won the top prize.

“With 12 million developers in the world, you need to know how you going to make yourself stand out”, Beley said in closing.
