Honoring Africa

President Jacob Zuma yesterday (25 May 2015) led the country’s Africa Day celebrations under the theme We are Africa Opening the doors of learning and culture from Cape to Cairo in Pretoria.

Africa Day – the celebration of African culture and unity – commemorates the 1963 formation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), the precursor to the African Union (AU). The day acknowledges the progress that Africans have made while reflecting upon the common challenges we face in a global environment.

The African Union, comprised of 53 member states, has brought together the continent of Africa to collectively address the challenges it has faced, such as armed conflict, climate change and poverty.

The Minister of Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa, announced South Africa’s month-long programme that will feature all aspects of arts, culture and heritage. The month will be celebrated through variety of activities which will also aim to support the AU 2015 theme Women Empowerment and Development towards Agenda 2063.

The Durban University of Technology supports Africa Day and is proud to be an African university of technology.
