Our envisioned Innovation Hub from 2020 on will be a “one-stop-shop” where technology, innovation and entrepreneurship support will be available to the DUT staff and students. All Faculties will be encouraged to use the facilities so there is a high potential for interdisciplinary research and development and commercialization.

Computer Simulation of the Innovation Hub Building

The building dimensions will be approximately 2000 sqm. The interior of the building will incorporate the design for the Fab Lab, the App Factory, the Rapid Business lncubator and the Entrepreneurial Desk.

The building will have 2 levels and will encompass:

  • Workshops and a tooling section
  • A Maker Space for Entrepreneurship
  • Rapid Business lncubator
  • Research section
  • IT Lab for App Factory
  • Electronics Lab, Biotech Lab, Laser Lab, CNC lab, Kuka Lab
  • Testing section
  • Training center for energy and business courses
  • Approximately 20 offices (including space for visiting international lecturers)
  • Toilets
  • Kitchen
  • Boardroom
  • Reception area and showroom
  • Single guest lecture room
  • Store Rooms

The plans for an Innovation Hub within the campus of Durban University of Technology have been completed and the City of Durban gave green light to start. With the support of DHET, SEDA, and other funding and sponsorship the overall budget could be secured. By end of the year 2020 the Innovation Hub will be operational.
