He received his Masters degree in Emergency Medical Care in 2008. He served the Department as previous HOD for a period of six years. He currently is the coordinator for the Btech: EMC programme and is also a research supervisor for the undergraduate and postgraduate programme. |

Department Secretary: Mrs Leigh Meyers Tel: 031 373 5203 Email: leighm@dut.ac.za Campus: Ritson Bio: Mrs Leigh Meyers has been the Academic Secretary for the Department of Emergency Medical Care and Rescue since 2008. She completed the National Diploma in Office Management and Technology in 2011 completed the Bachelor of Technology in Office Management and Technology in 2013 and completed Masters in Management Sciences in Administration and Information Management in 2019. She has been on the administrative staff at Durban University of Technology for over 25 years and has worked in various departments at various campuses. She plays an active and integral role in the department’s operational activities and is always available to provide advice and support for staff members, students and the general public alike. |

Lecturer: Mr Gift Chule Tel: 031 373 5269 Email: ntuthukoC1@dut.ac.za Campus: Ritson Bio: Mr Chule is the second year coordinator for the BHSc EMC programme. He lectures Emergency Medical Care II and Medical Rescue I in second year. He graduated from the DUT with a BhSc and MHSc Emergency Medical Care. He is pursuing his PhD in Emergency Medical Care at the DUT. |

Lecturer: Mrs Amy Lagesse Tel: 031 373 5606 Email: Amyt@dut.ac.za Campus: Ritson Bio: Mrs Amy Lagesse co-ordinates the Clinical Practice component of the Bachelor of Health Sciences in Emergency Medical Care and facilitates the running of the Department’s operational wing. Mrs Lagesse has previous years’ experience working on both rotor wing and fixed wing aircrafts as a flight paramedic in the Western Cape. She graduated from the DUT with a BhSc and MHSc Emergency Medical Care, and graduated with Master’s Study in EMC in 2021 at the Durban University of Technology. |

Specialist Clinical Tutor: Mrs Karabo Faith Tsiri Tel: 031 373 5336 Email: karabot@dut.ac.za Campus: Ritson Bio: Mrs Faith Tsiri started working in the department from September 2013. She was previously a Facilitator for the CCA short course programme until the end of September 2013. She is currently employed in the post of Specialist Clinical Tutor, assisting with the first year Bachelor of Health Sciences EMC programme. She is also responsible for medical equipment and clinical laboratories. Together with other staff members, Mrs Tsiri is also involved with student selection and registration. Mrs. Tsiri has worked in the EMS environment, in both private & public sectors, since 2002 and has experience in training and communications. She is a DUT graduate (National Diploma – EMC & B.Tech (EMC). |

Clinical Instructor : Mrs Robyn Stander Tel: 031 373 5532 Email: robinc@dut.ac.za Campus: Ritson Bio: Mrs Robyn Stander is a Clinical Instructor at the Department of Emergency Medical Care. She obtained her National Higher Certificate in Emergency Care and she completed her Bachelor in Emergency Medical Care from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. Mrs Stander has over 10 years of experience in the Emergency Medical Care field, during which she has worked as an operational Emergency Care Technician and Emergency Care Practitioner. She completed her Master of Health Sciences in Emergency Medical Care at the Durban University of Technology in 2022. |

Lecture : Mr Yugan Pillay Tel: 031 373 5199 Email: yuganp@dut.ac.za Campus: Ritson Bio: Mr Yugan Pillay, a Lecturer in the Department of Emergency Medical Care & Rescue, is a registered Emergency Care Practitioner with the Health Professions Council of South Africa, holding a Master’s degree in Emergency Medical Care (2008) and currently completing a PhD in Emergency Medicine at the University of Cape Town. With nearly 25 years in the pre-hospital environment as a clinician, educator and patient safety advocate, Mr Pillay’s clinical and academic interests abide in emergency airway management, sedation-analgesia, major trauma, paramedic clinical decision making and disaster medicine. Mr Pillay has extensive clinical experience both locally and internationally in multiple clinical environments including emergency services, patient retrieval services, aeromedical services and international humanitarian disaster response. Mr Pillay currently serves as a subject matter expert and advisor to provincial, national and international healthcare organisations, with particular interests in improving the quality and governance of care in all-hazard health emergencies. Mr Pillay is also intimately involved with clinical and health-systems research with authorship in multiple peer-reviewed publications |

Lecture: Mr Melvin Chetty Tel: 031 373 5764 Email: MelvinC@dut.ac.za Campus: Ritson Bio: Mr. Melvin Chetty, a Lecturer in the Department of Emergency Medical Care and Rescue, graduated with the National Diploma, Bachelor of Technology degree and Master of Health Sciences degree in Emergency Medical Care from the Durban University of Technology. He also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Tertiary Education from the University of South Africa. Mr Chetty has over 16 years’ experience as an Advanced Life Support practitioner, and has worked in private and public EMS systems locally and abroad. He is a senior flight medic for rotor wing aeromedical operations. Mr Chetty has over four years’ Higher Education teaching experience, and is an accredited instructor for the following courses: Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Paediatric Advanced Life Support, Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers, and International Trauma Life Support. He has been appointed as a Board Moderator for the Health Professions Council of South Africa and is currently pursuing a PhD in Emergency Medical Care.. |
