Tutor Training and Development

This programme targets senior students preferably in postgraduate studies and where they may be away in industry or WIL, competent senior students are recruited who must be trained before tackling tutoring. The tutors trained in this programme are mainly utilised in mainstream subjects, Residence Educational Programme (REP), First-Year Student Experience (FYSE) and GETT Cornerstone Modules.

Objectives

  • Tutor Training & Development of tutors aims to:
  • Identify connections of who are DUT students, what are attributes of a good tutor, and abilities to facilitate small classroom and strategies for active learning, and the tutoring experience.
  • Reflect on their tutoring practice and formulate goals for personal learning and development.
  • Demonstrate an improved understanding of tutored material in the subject-specific areas.
  • Recognize different learning styles and use a variety of learning strategies in their tutoring sessions.
  • Convey information in a variety of contexts and communicate effectively and responsibly with a number of audiences (students, faculty, lecturers, etc.).
  • Demonstrate effective time management and organizational skills.
  • Gather and integrate information from a variety of contexts such as Lecturer involvement, evaluations, surveys and questionnaires.
  • Monitor and track success rates of students in their tests and examinations
