BIOGRAPHY

Dr Shoba Rathilal is the acting Director of CELT which is responsible for Student Development, Curriculum and Staff Development, eLearning, Online Distance Learning, Earmarked Grants, and Strategic Projects in Learning and Teaching. As the Curriculum and Staff Development Coordinator, Dr Rathilal manages multiple CELT projects: viz. Extended Curriculum programme (ECP) leadership and development; New Generation Academic Programme (nGAP) Co-ordination and Development; New Emerging Scholars Programme (NESP), Curriculum Conversations (CC) and Design Thinking and Project-based Learning.

Shoba is driven by a transformative agenda for higher education and therefore subscribes to theories that allow for an unpacking and critique of the underlying generative mechanisms that result in particular practices within higher education, with an intent to explore possibilities to transform practices. Shoba’s research interest is in the area of literacies, numeracies, PBL, and Design Thinking. She has a special interest in engaging with research within the legitimation code theory framework. Her PhD thesis is titled Planning for Numeracy in Higher Education: A South African UOT Case Study.

Dr Rathilal has presented her research at National and International Conferences and has published book chapters and journal articles. She is currently co-editing titled Academic Staff Development: Disruptions, Complexities Change (Envisioning New Futures)
