New Emerging Scholars Programme (NESP) Co-ordination

The NESP is a two-component programme aimed at identifying and nurturing young scholars towards building an academic career. The NESP is mainly funded by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), with a possibility of a funding partner. The first component of the NESP is a four-year scholarship programme which funds NQF 7 graduates towards their NQF 8 (1 year) and NQF 9 (2 years) . The second component is a three-year scholarship programme which funds NQF 8 graduates for NQF 9 studies (2 years). Both components of the NESP are complemented by an internship year upon the completion of the NQF 9 qualification.

Moreover, NESP candidates can apply for the French funded NESP posts. Candidates appointed against these posts will be expected to complete their NQF 9 studies at a French public university. However, the appointee will be expected complete their internship at the South African university hosting the post.
