Access for SuccessThe Access for Success Project is one of the DUT Big Rock’s institutional projects. Its focus is to understand who our students are, what are their strengths and weaknesses and how can these be addressed in a curriculum to improve students for success. In doing so, we design and implement institutional assessments to compliment access and placement instruments. Hence, we have DUT Standardized Assessment Tests (DUT SATAP) that are used by different academic departments in different faculties to do the following. To test already enrolled DUT first year students in particular programmes for the purpose of diagnosing their strengths and weaknesses so that they can be addressed through Learning, Teaching and Assessments for student success. While in some departments, these tests are used together with their department specific criteria to place students in correct academic programmes to ensure student success. Below is a summary of each test that is currently offered through DUT SATAP Testing namely Academic Literacies and English for Academic Purposes, Mathematics, Numeracy, and Scientific Reasoning. |
Academic Literacies Test | aims to assess the students’ abilities in terms of making meaning from texts that they are likely to encounter in their studies; and understanding words and discourse signals in their contexts; and many more. |
Mathematics Test | assesses mathematical reasoning in the following areas: procedural fluency; conceptual understanding; strategic competence; adaptive reasoning; etc with main focus on application. The Mathematical concepts assessed include Numerical Applications, Mathematical Expressions and Equations; Functions and Graphs, Patterns sequences and series, Calculus, Financial and Probability; Measurements; Trigonometry and Geometry. |
Numeracy Test | assesses the same competencies as assessed by the mathematic test. However, the mathematical content is downplayed. Among the mathematics content used in the test include Numerical applications; Mathematical Expressions and Equations; Functions and Graphs; Space, Shape, Measurement and Conversion; Data Handling, and more. |
