BIOGRAPHY

Nokhuthula Mavela is a qualified homoeopath with over 10 years’ experience in higher education mainly in the disciplines of health sciences and general education. She serves as the Teaching and Learning Development Practitioner (TLDP) within the Student Academic Support and Development unit (SASDU), her roles include coordination for the first year student experience (FYSE), senior year student experience (SYSE), academic advising (AA), residence education programme (REP), tutoring services (TS) for the training of tutors, mentors and academic advisors, in the Faculty of Health Sciences as well as the Faculty of Arts and Design at DUT including design thinking programmes for students. Nokhuthula serves as a member of the community of practice of the Entrepreneurship Development in Higher Education (EDHE) under DHET, as well as the Student Women Economic Empowerment Programme (SWEEP) being a voice for entrepreneurship at the institution and EDHE. Her research interests lie in health systems with a keen interest on education and training policy reform for the integration of complementary and alternative medicine into the public health care sector. As TLDP, Dr Mavela provides academic support to both staff and students to foster academic success focusing on the development of critical skills, adaptations and self-concepts in influencing academic success

In 2017 Dr Mavela was recognized by the largest global honorary society Golden Key for her commitment to academic excellence and community engagements. In 2022 Dr Mavela was a nominee for the National Science and Technology Forum, she currently serves as a core team member for the DUT women in Science chapter and is also a recipient of the DUT Pinnacle employee recognition award as part of the institutional first year student orientation team.

Dr. Mavela is an enterprise design thinking practitioner as awarded by IBM.
