Design Thinking in PracticeDesign thinking is a structured approach for resolving complicated challenges and coming up with practical solutions. In terms of higher education, the approach can be useful in the conceptualisation and implementation of programmes towards the strategic goals of the university, conceptualising and implementing of programmes/modules that develop Design Thinking Practices and attributes for future graduates. As a creative pedagogical approach, it could be used to allow students to generate new ideas for further development and assess them using criteria to assist them find meaningful solutions to the challenges they are presented with. This programme in CELT includes staff development in the design of learning activities, modules, programmes that foster design thinking, student support in adopting design thinking as an approach in problem solving and institutional development in adopting Design Thinking to respond to complex teaching and learning, research and engagement challenges. Project Based Learning and Design Thinking are two innovative strategies that promote creativity, innovation, adaptability and criticality. These methodologies are not just educational tools but are catalysts for fostering real-world problem-solving capabilities, creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship among our students. The university is dedicated to supporting the integration of Design Thinking and Project-Based Learning into the curriculum and recognizes the importance of allocating resources for such initiatives. Each year the DVC Teaching and Learning approves proposals through the Big Rocks projects, which demonstrate potential in adopting PBL and DT. The aim is to promote self-directed learning, facilitate self-awareness, and encourage students to become active partners in applying and generating knowledge. These proposals prioritize active and collaborative learning, teamwork, and problem-solving through the effective integration of theory and practice. |
