Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

The Teaching Excellence Awards (TEA) (formerly called VC’s Teaching Excellence Award) provides the Durban University of Technology (DUT) an opportunity to acknowledge excellent teaching. The Teaching Excellence Awards (TEA) are aimed at acknowledging the excellent teaching practices of all full-time academic members of staff at the Durban University of Technology (DUT). Through these awards, DUT has an opportunity to showcase its achievement in teaching and learning to the higher education sector, alumni, staff, students, parents and donors. Through these awards, DUT seeks an effective way to provide role models for academics and students and to provide leaders with the opportunity to recognize outstanding performance and contributions that support the strategic imperatives of the operational domain. TEA awards categories are:

  • Faculty Emerging Teaching Excellence Award (FETEA)

Eligibility & Criteria

–           FETEA rewards excellent teaching of emerging academics at the DUT. Emerging academics are those academics that are new to teaching in Higher Education. This category may include academics with a minimum of two (2) years teaching experience and those academics in the new Generation Academics Programme (nGAP) and Nurturing Emerging Scholars Programme (NESP).  It recognizes emerging academics who display a long-term vision for their professional and career development by means of exceptional and proven achievement towards innovation in teaching and learning within their field. FETEA will be accompanied by the presentation of a scroll at the Annual University Award Ceremony and will be accompanied by the allocation of a monetary award to a cost centre for the use of the awardee in the pursuit of academic activities. The focus will be on the recognition of the achievement of excellence as assessed by a team of a minimum of three internal assessors including representatives from CELT and CQPA.

  • Faculty Teaching Excellence Award (FTEA)

Eligibility & Criteria

–           This award recognizes and honours exceptional and proven achievements in teaching excellence, as well as innovative approaches to facilitate learning that inspire and challenge students. It encourages scholarly teaching that leads to contextualized teaching approaches and strategies that make learning accessible, applicable and valid to students in a specific discipline. FTEA may be awarded annually to an outstanding academic in each faculty. The Award will be accompanied by the presentation of a scroll at the Annual University Award Ceremony and will be accompanied by the allocation of a monetary award to a cost centre for the use of the awardee in the pursuit of academic activities. The focus will be on the recognition of the achievement of excellence as assessed by a team of a minimum of three internal assessors including representatives from CELT and CQPA.
