The Department of Chemical Engineering is currently engaging with the community of Springfield, Durban in an effort to assist in their flood management protocol. Stemming from the April and June 2021 floods that affected the greater parts of KZN and caused much damage and disaster, a call for assistance in Flood Management was addressed by the Department to assist the community of Springfield in this regard.

The staff of the Department recently visited the community and conducted a site visit in order to gain more insight and get a visual perspective on the matter. The community, at the time, which is some 2 years later, is only now starting to rebuild  with some arears still left unattended. The Department was able to gather vital information needed to formulate the crucial steps required that the members of community can take to react to a disaster.

The Department aims at providing the community of Springfield with a booklet encompassing Flood Management and to provide a “go bag” which will be designed as a waterproof bag meant to house important documents and medication in an event of evacuation.
