SMME Training
Nozipho Cele conducted training for SME traders at Ugu District from the 9th to the 11th of October in Port Shepstone. The aim of project was to take research conducted by the Retail Chair to various communities. We intend to roll-out further programmes.
Launch 3 November 2019
The Retail Chair was presented to industry and the University community at a launch. The launch further consolidated the partnership between industry, Universities, TVETS and the W & R SETA. The launch of the Retail Chair was a highlight event for the principal funder the Wholesale and Retail SETA in celebration with the DUT on the establishment of a Leadership and Research Chair at the University.

Trends on Retail Symposium – 4 November 2019
Academic Symposium focusing on International trends in Retail. Our main target audience were TVET college curriculum specialists, academic staff and WIL coordinators, DUT Marketing and Retail staff and WIL coordinators and Retailers. The intention was to form “Academics in Retail Forum” which was differed too early in 2020. Bursary students and Staff/students who were part of the German exchange programme also shared their knowledge and experience. The symposium was sponsored by the Department of Co-Operative Education. We thank them for this magnanimous gesture.
DHET TVET collaboration
The Retail Chair had met with Majuba TVET College and presented to the delegation the “Reconceptualizing Work Integrated Learning” proposal which entailed 3 months in class and 3 months in workplace alternative. The meeting was extremely successful as the vision of the Retail Chair and the Majuba TVET College vision was aligned with regard to Work Integrated Learning.
PSIR Ethekwini meeting
We were introduced to the PSIR team via Lumec, a research company. The aim of the meeting was to introduce the chair and inform them off the project activities. There WRLC aims to collaborate with the team and synergize efforts.
DHBW Prof Thomas Dobbelstein
The Retail Chair team met Prof Dobbelstein. The aim of the meeting was to introduce the chair and inform them off the project activities. The WRLC plans to collaborate with the team and synergize efforts. The retail chair would like to learn more about the German WIL model and has invited Prof Dobbelstein to present at the upcoming retail forums. DHBW will also host the chair and W&R SETA in Ravensburg post COVID-19. W&R SETA KZN Regional manager met Prof Dobbelstein with the hope of establishing a MOU between W&R SETA and DHBW.
Trends on Retail
King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality visit
A DUT Delegation headed by Shakeel Ori comprising DUT employees from a spectrum of departments and DUT partners. The visit took place from the 2nd to the 5th of February 2020. The DUT was invited by the KSD Municipality to engage in partnership for the revitalization of the Municipality and discussions on a proposal to start develop a town in the Coffee Bay area.
The visit included engagements with the Executive Mayor, Councillors and senior Municipal Managers. Two KSD TVET Campuses were visited. Other visits included the Hole in Wall and the Mandela Heritage Route. The Retail Chair plans to get involved by partnering with industry partners and local TVET Colleges like KSD TVET for job placements and internship programmes.
Academic forum 3 March 2020 “Changing the landscape of the Retail curriculum”
A programme for TVET Academic Heads entitled “Changing the landscape of the Retail curriculum” was held on the 3rd of March 2020 at Coastlands Ridge Hotel. Speakers included industry practitioners, Planet 54, ILDP 2019 Group and Kris Moodley, Professor Dobbelstein from Germany who addressed the TVET’s on Work Integrated Learning.
Retailers meeting 4 March 2020 “Research, Innovation and Efficiency in Retail”
We have organized a Retailer engagement programme for industry partners entitled “Research, Innovation and Efficiency in Retail” on the 4th of March 2020 at the Coastlands Ridge Hotel. Speakers included Executive Dean of Management Sciences, Prof Fulufelo Netswera, FR Research, MRPG Foundation, DUT lecturers Trevor Naidoo and Ebrahim Asmal. Nivedhna presented the research topics to the delegates to develop a research agenda and establish a Retailers Consultative Forum.
DUT TVET DHET SETA Breakfast Engagement
The DUT Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovations and Engagement office prompted the WRLC to organise a virtual engagement breakfast with DHET, TVET Colleges and the SETA’s to extend collaboration and partnerships with the aim of signing of an MOU. The Retail chair office has developed a strong relationship with the KZN DHET office over the past year. Various speakers from SUT, DHET, TVETs and the SETAs were included in the programme and shared messages about galvanizing the relationship between DUT and the TVET sector and how the partnership can be beneficial to the respective institutions, teaching and learning, students and employability opportunities
E-tailing opportunity between W&R SETA and World Focus Group
An industry engagement was organised between the WRLC , W& R SETA with the World Focus Group about and E-tailing project. The WRLC arranged a meeting with the W & R SETA CEO Mr Tom Mkwanazi and COO Ms Ntombi Dludla with World Focus group with triggered the project
Integration at its best
Mr Yunus Doba was invited by Hypercheck to speak on the integration of Checkout and Hypercheck. Mr Doba addressed the store managers. The talk focused on how various businesses had experienced challenges due to economic factors and effects of COVID-19. Established retailers have gone into business rescue and buy-outs. Hypercheck had bought Checkout Supermarket following a business rescue process and the importance of a seamless integration for managers and employees was integral for the venture.
